1. The Girl Who Drank the Moon

by Kelly Barnhill

This is one of my all-time favourite stories. The book is about a girl called Luna who is raised by a witch in a forest. The witch accidentally feeds Luna moonlight instead of starlight, which gives Luna magical powers that she must learn to control. Luna befriends a very wise Swamp Monster named Glerk who enjoys poetry. There is also a dragonling called Fyrian who loves to sing, although he’s not very good according to Glerk!

2. The Tea Dragon Society

by Katie O'Neill

The Tea Dragon Society follows the story of a blacksmith apprentice called Greta and the people she meets as she becomes immersed in the enchanting world of tea dragons. In this beautifully written and illustrated story, Greta rescues a little lost dragon and returns it to its owners, leading her to discover an ancient art form—the care of tea dragons! A wonderful book for all ages.

3. Deeplight

by Frances Hardinge

In this story, best friends Hark and Jelt scavenge for relics of the gods, once-great sea monsters that mysteriously died long ago.

There is danger at every turn, from the deep and unpredictable sea to the desperate and fearful people who live near the rugged coast.

I was fascinated by the depictions of the sea creatures, with names like Kalmaddoth, The Glass Cardinal, The Red Forlorn, and The Hidden Lady. It’s a story I want to read over and over again!
